Is the Cavity Serious?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tooth decay is remarkably common in young children, and can vary greatly in its severity. In some cases, the decay may be caught before it becomes a full cavity, in which case a filling may not be a pressing issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, often these cavities aren\u2019t detected until they reach the second layer of the tooth, called dentin. This tends to be incredibly uncomfortable for your child, so in these cases, a dentist would consider the prospect of filling a baby tooth much more seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will the Tooth Fall Out Soon?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Naturally, it isn\u2019t necessarily worth filling a tooth that\u2019s about to fall out anyway, so the first thing that a dentist will do to determine if a baby tooth needs to be filled is to figure out when it\u2019s likely to fall out. This is done by using imaging technology to see how much of the baby tooth\u2019s root is still present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the dentist expects the tooth to fall out in the next 6-12 months, they may recommend just having your child improve their oral hygiene and ignoring the need for a filling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it Likely to Spread?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cavities are the result of a bacterial infection, which means that even a small cavity could potentially spread to other teeth if they aren\u2019t treated. If your child\u2019s dentist believes that this is likely, they could fill a baby tooth to prevent the cavities from multiplying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, you would need a professional to make the call about whether your child needs a filling. Hopefully, this guide will make this conversation easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
